"Precious pearl inside an even more precious casket".
Lake Molveno is the second largest inland natural lake in Trentino (3.3 km2 - 4.4 km long, 1.5 km wide and 124 m deep at the deepest point) and one with the bluest waters. It got formed about 3,000 years ago by a huge landslide from the slope of Mount Dion. During a draw down at the beginning of the 1950s, the pre-existing forest and other remains were then brought to light, and are now on show at the Natural Science Museum of Trento. Lake Molveno looks like a pearl set in the midst of the Brenta Dolomites and the Paganella; almost a century ago, author Antonio Fogazzaro, who loved to come on holiday to Molveno, had actually used the words: "precious pearl inside an even more precious casket", to describe this crystal clear body of water that reflects the peaks of Brenta Dolomites. In the summertime, the lake is used for swimming, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing or simply boating, while the green grass beach on the western side of the lake - which has been defined as one of the most beautiful beaches in Trentino - is the ideal place just to relax and bask in the sun. Lake Molveno is also renowned for its large fish population.
