A Memorial to the 20th century Wars in Rovereto.

For over 80 years now the Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra of Rovereto, has been committed to collecting and preserving documents and records on World War I. Housed, since 1921, in the Rovereto's Castle - a beautiful example of 15th century Venetian military architecture - it has become one of the most authoritative exhibitions and collections in Italy dedicated to 20th century warfare. The events affecting the people of Rovereto - which was one of the most heavily bombed cities, and suffered the tragic death of so many young voluntary irredentist patriots, such as Fabio Filzi and Damiano Chiesa - have made this Museum one of the most well-known war memorial sites in Italy. The original scale models of the war front and the postcards, the propaganda posters and trench newspapers, the letters and diaries written by the soldiers, the over 40,000 photographs and 2,500 medals and war decorations, and the epigraphs stored and displayed here, help us understand how the wars fought during the last century left a significant mark on the conscience of both individuals and society as a whole.
Over the years the Museum has broadened its scope covering other ages and conflicts, such as World War II. Besides the information panels summarizing some key events from the declaration of war in June 1940, to the episodes of 8th September 1943, and the end of the war in 1945, a number of uniforms, flags, posters and leaflets, arms and memorabilia build up a picture of the campaigns of France, Greece, Russia and North Africa, the establishment of the Social Republic in Northern Italy, the ordeal of the prisoners of war, the German occupation and the Partisan struggle.
