Monte Bondone
In memory of a great ‘climber' and for all bicycle lovers: this road race was established to keep alive the memory of Charly Gaul, who became an authentic cycling legend on Trento's Monte Bondone.
Established in October 2005, when the great Charly Gaul accepted the invitation to be present on Monte Bondone, the mountain of Trento, famous for Gaul's epic cycling exploit in June 1956, the "Gran Fondo Charly Gaul", now in its 5th edition, offers two tracks starting from downtown Piazza Duomo. From here it is possible to choose either the easier 90 km route, consisting of a warm up in the "Novaline" valley bottom area and the famous but strenuous Charly Gaul climb at the end, or the Gran Fondo route (142 km) consisting of a first ascent to Viote from the Garniga Terme side followed by a descent towards Lagolo passing through the Marocche di Dro, alongside the Cavedine, Toblino and Terlago lakes and a climb up Mount Bondone through Sopramonte after having passed Vezzano and Cadine. Two extremely charming routes that curl around Mount Bondone and offer enchanting views and landscapes, from the beautiful piazza Duomo in Trento to the Viote plain, from the lakes and castles of Valle dei Laghi to the Marocche di Dro biotope, from Garniga Terme with its famous hay baths to the countless hairpin bends of the Charly Gaul ascent. At the starting line we will see the champion Gilberto Simoni, devoted testimonial of this event ever since its creation five years ago.
