A land of castles, stage to fierce battles in the past, today producer of excellent wines
The ancient village of Calliano, located on the banks of Rio Cavallo, the stream that descends down to Folgaria before flowing into the Adige, stands at the feet of the majestic Beseno Castle. Between the cities of Trento e Rovereto, it opens out northwards towards Vallagarina, a garden of vineyards and a land of fortresses and bastions. It has pre-historic origins and in the Middle Ages was guarded by still visible castles with their respective "murazzi" (embankments).
As a strategic location, it was the stage for fierce battles, the most famous of which being that fought on 10th of August 1487 between the Venetian army and two small columns of Trentino soldiers. The event is still commemorated every year with a spectacular historical pageant. Worth visiting in the historical centre is the church of San Lorenzo (1724) built in neo-classical style in honour of the Trentino-Tyrolean victory in 1487, and the Moll and Dalla torre palazzos.
The land produces imposing quantities of table grapes and of quality Trentino wines, making Calliano a pleasant stop also for gourmets sure to enjoy the local cuisine.
