A regional capital and fruit growing centre on Lake Santa Giustina, framed by the Brenta Dolomites
Cles is the regional capital of the Val di Non and is one main fruit growing, commercial and industrial centres of the Trentino. Located in the large basin of Santa Giustina, its plateau is overlooked by the Brenta Dolomites. The age-old Castel Cles is perched on the top of a peak facing the shores of the artificial Lake Santa Giustina, and is one of the highlights in the area.
Apart from the archaeological findings discovered here, which date back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, special mention goes to the renowned "Tavola Celsiniana". A faithful reproduction of this Roman edict on citizenship (46 AD) can be admired in the square opposite the Palazzo Assessorile.
Cles owes its greatest splendour to Bernardo Clesio, Bishop Prince of Trento - and Cardinal since 1530 - who was one of the driving forces behind the Council of Trento, as well as being one of the most important political-religious players in Europe of the 15th and 16th centuries.
Cles features a wide range of services and is an excellent base from which to explore every corner of the Val di Non valley, as well as its numerous, spectacular landscapes.
