Luserna, where Cimbrian is still spoken, is a natural viewpoint from Trentino into the Veneto
A natural viewpoint into the Veneto, Luserna is the smallest municipality occupying the large Trentino plateaus, but also one of the richest in history and traditions. It is actually known as a Cimbrian island, since Cimbrian - an Old German language - is still spoken here, following the colonization of the area between the 10th and 13th centuries. Today it is kept alive by the Istituto Culturale Cimbro - Kulturinstitut Lusèrn, a Cimbrian cultural institution.
The town is an open-air cultural workshop cherishing examples of the local rural architecture - such as the Haus von Prükk House Museum - while the Luserna Documentation Centre organizes periodical exhibitions. Here too there are numerous and evocative remainders of World War One, such as Fort Lusérn, Millegrobbe trenches and Costalta cemetery.
The main sport and entertainment facilities of the plateaus can be easily reached from here, such as the trekking trails connecting the Austro-Hungarian forts of World War I, the 17 tracks of the Nordic Walking Park and the numerous opportunities for mountain-bike enthusiasts.
