Summer
From Rhaetia to the "pitores" , in Mazzin in the Fassa Dolomites
Mazzin is Val di Fassa's smallest municipality and features the hamlets of Campestrin and Fontanazzo. The town is also renowned as archaeological site: important traces of settlements of Rhaetian origin - the ancient people who used to lived in Val di Fassa in the 5th century B.C. - have been found here.
Mazzin also cherishes the only example of a rural-noble manor of the entire valley, Casa Battel, which features a pinnacled tower, frescoes and decorations of significant artistic value. Mazzin was once known as the village of the "pitores", the artisan decorators who used to emigrate seasonally in search of houses to paint. Like every centre of Val di Fassa, Mazzin is a privileged point of departure, especially in the summertime, for several hikes and trekking tours on the nearby peaks of the Dolomites.
Numerous pathways from the village, through the small valleys, climb up towards the soaring peaks of the Dolomites. It is easy to remain spellbound by enchanting Lake Antermoia, the Alpine tarn sweetly isolated in the Northern area of the Catinaccio, a mythical place featuring crystal waters, isolated stone-pits, and as the legend goes, inhabited by a very beautiful nymph.
