Age-old mining traditions amongst the Mòcheni and spectacular Lake Erdèmolo
Palù del Fersina (1396 m above sea level) is located on the right bank of the River Fersina and boasts some of the most interesting and authentic popular traditions of the Valle dei Mòcheni.
The Istituto Culturale Mòcheno is headquartered here, and studies history and traditions of the Mòcheno community. It also provides information on the area's unique language, which is still spoken by its inhabitants (this language of German origins was brought here by the valley's first colonisers).
Traditional Alpine farmhouses with wooden roofs are scattered throughout this impervious territory and are always located in sunny areas, with the Lagorai mountain range towering in the background. The trails climbing up the mountains from the town can be enjoyed both on foot and by mountain-bike. Clear streams and stretches of scented rhododendrons accompany travellers on their way up to one of the most popular destinations for hikers starting out from Palù: Lake Erdèmolo (1700 m). From here, travellers can reach the Alpine Refuge of Sette Selle, where they can spend the night.
The Mining Museum of Graub va Hardimbl - this mine was already being worked in the 16th century and remained open till the last century - is located near the path leading to Lake Erdemolo, 5 km from Palù. Since the dawn of time, the Valle del Fersina has been renowned for its mineral wealth and relative metal-working activities.
One of the most special traditions of the area is the Stella, the star. On New Year's, conscripts carry the multi-coloured glowing Stella through the streets of the town, by accompanying its way with traditional songs. The most mysterious tradition of the area is instead the Vècio and the Vècia, the old man and the old woman, which takes place on the last Tuesday of Carnival.
