A gateway to the great holiday lake, Nago and Torbole offer marvellous views of Lake Garda
Nago, a town nestled at the foot of the 12th century Castle of Penede, is a spectacular gateway to Lake Garda, which it overlooks offering picture postcard perfect views.
Sights not to miss are the spectacular Marmitte dei Giganti, glacial potholes formed during the Quaternary Era, and the Forte di Nago, an Austro-Hungarian fortress built on two levels, reconverted into restaurants and exhibition facilities, also offering a marvellous view from high up across the lake.
Once a charming fishing village, Torbole has turned into an internationally renowned sailing and surfing centre nowadays. The town has skilfully preserved its original features and lay-out, including its amphitheatre-shaped houses on north side of Lake Garda. Its privileged wind-whipped position, together with its hectic atmosphere, have helped it become a key venue for sailing and windsurf lovers.
Goethe described this little town and its extraordinary winds as one of nature's wonders. Favoured by artists, painters and writers - who have been inspired by the beauty of its surroundings - the small town has preserved its characteristic historical features, such as the Casetta del Dazio, a throwback from the Austro-Hungarian period located at the little harbour's mouth, and the Casa Beust, where artists used to meet in the aftermath of the Second World War.
