Vermiglio, history and handcraft along the road to the Adamello-Presanella mountain chain

Vermiglio is the last town in the Val di sole valley. Perched on the slopes of Mount Boai, it is famous for its handcraft, especially for the unique ceramic stoves manufactured there.

Badly damaged during the First World War, the town started undergoing reconstruction works in 1919. Places to see include the churches of S. Stefano (1215) and S. Caterina and la Casa del Dazio.

From Vermiglio you can hike towards Presanella and the Adamello refuges. Forte Strino is located on the road between Vermiglio and Tonale Pass. It is the most important fortress built by the Hapsburg Government - between 1860 and 1912 - to ward the pass on the Italian border. From 1993 and 1997 it underwent refurbishing works and now it is the headquarter of an all-summer-open permanent exhibition, featuring relics, documents and photographs related to the First World War. There is also an interesting museum, the Museo della Guerra Bianca, hosted in Emilio Serra's home.
