Folgaria, a village, with ancient origins, in south-eastern Trentino in the mountains between the rivers Adige and Brenta, has successfully kept alive its own history and culture. Situated just 18km from the town of Rovereto and 25km from Trento, its plateau is a harmonious succession of valley gorges, streams and wide plateaus interspersed with extensive woody slopes...

This corner of Trentino has a history that goes back over a thousand years. Important periods include German-Cimbrian immigration from the 10-13th centuries, which led to a strong German influence in the area, the long period of the Magnifica Comunita', the Great War (1914 - 1918), which left the imposing ruins of Cherle, Sommo Alto and Dosso delle Somme forts, as well as the recent Cold War, testified by Base Tuono, the museum exhibition being set up that is reminiscent of the former missile base of Passo Coe, in operation from 1966 - 1977 and equipped with Nike-Hercules missiles. Since the mid-19th century, Folgaria has been such a natural tourist area that today summer and winter tourism is the most important economic activity of the plateau. The area offers holidays that are ideal for families with a special focus on youngsters and "great sport": Folgaria has hosted training camps for leading national and international basketball teams, as well as for national football teams and youth teams. The village has top-level sports facilities including the Maso Spilzi golf course (9-hole, but about to be doubled), the Palasport (Olympic swimming pools, a covered basketbal court, fitness centre and conference centre), the La Pineta standard football field, the Palaghiaccio - Palafolgaria ice rink, the Nordic Walking Park and the permanent 100km MTB trail called Forti - Fortezze Bike Tour.

Starting off the morning with a bracing hay bath, spending the day hiking in the mountains, before having a dip in an Alpine lake, and then discovering the history and culture of the city of the Council of Trento. Then, after the sun has set behind the Brenta massif, enjoying a good glass of wine among the most beautiful vineyards anywhere. No, it's not a dream. They're just a few of the opportunities offered by a holiday in Trento, on Monte Bondone, in Valle dei Laghi and at the Garniga Terme spa resort. The young players of the Allievi Nazionali team will be training this summer in Rumo - Val di Non, from 2 to 12 August 2012.

Val di Non: land of sport, nature and delicious traditions. A green plateau, perfect for family holidays and for those seeking simple and genuine hospitality

Situated in the heart of western Trentino, Val di Non is known all over Italy for its juicy apples and for its historical and cultural jewels: Castel Thun and the Santuary of S. Romedio. This enchanting green plateau offers all kinds of recreation for those who love sport. The Brenta Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage, and the Maddalene mountain chain are ideal for high altitude trekking. This year those who like pedalling will have many kilometres of cycle tracks at their disposal, including a brand-new one in Upper Val di Non, and mountain bike trails. The valley is full of deep canyons where you can venture on foot or in a kayak among crystal clear waterfalls, steep-sided gorges and narrow gullies. Every summer the local Tourist Information Office organises a rich calendar of activities for young guests and families called "Val di Non... alla Scoperta" (Discovering Val di Non) the motto of which is "Abbasso la Noia" (Down with Boredom). Much emphasis is placed on learning outdoor sports: weekly schools are organized for young bikers, beginner courses for rock climbing and horse riding and, for the more enterprising, also lessons to learn the first strokes with a real golf club! However, Val di Non offers not only sport, but also much more: gourmet lovers are spoilt for choice among the tasty apple-based lunches proposed by the agriturs situated in the countryside, traditional dinners served in one of the many mountain refuges, or irresistible snacks of milk and genuine cheeses that can be enjoyed in the cool mountain dairies ... in Val di Non it is always time for a delicious break along the walk!

ALTOPIANO DI BRENTONICO

The Altopiano di Brentonico, a plateau on the Trentino side of Monte Baldo, is renowned throughout Europe as the "Hortus Italiae" - the Garden of Italy - for its wealth of plants and flowers.

Care for the environment, rewarded by Legambiente with its Green Flag award, has led to the establishment of the Flower Reserve of Monte Baldo. In the Bés-Corna Piana Nature Reserve visitors can admire some very ancient endemic species that survived the glaciations, especially the orchids, many varieties of which can be found here.
The Renaissance botanical gardens of Palazzo Baisi feature some very interesting varieties of plants and flowers, divided by type of habitat. Worth visiting are also the Fossil Museum of Monte Baldo and the Zeni Watermill, the only watermill of its kind still working in Trentino.
An extensive network of forest roads and trails, including the Trail of Peace, welcomes excursion, hiking, biking and horse-riding enthusiasts. A classic excursion is the hike up the Monte Altissimo ( m 2.076), from where one can enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Garda. The pleasure of the mountain and the charm of the lake can be best enjoyed with the panoramic rotating cableway linking Monte Baldo and the town of Malcesine on the lake shore. For the more adventurous there are many trails in the new Adventure Park of Polsa di Brentonico: guaranteed fun for adults and children with Tibetan bridges, ladder walkways, chain swings, flying tree trunks and suspended beams.

How to reach Brentonico:
- Brenner Motorway: Rovereto Sud - Lago di Garda Nord exit
- S.S. 240 towards Lake Garda, up to Mori
- At Mori, provincial road SP 3 junction to Brentonico
